Strands of Elegance Leadership Program - Handbags of Hope Drive

As part of the Strands of Elegance Leadership Program, I participated in a community service project supporting women in need. I reached out to friends and family to collect new and gently used handbags and purses that could be donated and given a new purpose.

After collecting the handbags, we filled them with necessities and personal-care items for women and donated them to a local shelter. I loved that this project went beyond simply donating an item. Each handbag was prepared with things a woman could actually use and was a small way of showing someone that she was thought about and cared for.

As a Debutante in the Strands of Elegance Leadership Program, I participated in Purses of Purpose & Bags of Love, a community service project created to give back to the North Fulton community. Debutantes collected purses and bags, filling them with toiletries and personal-care necessities for members of the unhoused community, in collaboration with Zion Missionary Baptist Church.

For my part, I reached out to friends and family to collect handbags and purses for donation. I then helped prepare and fill the bags with everyday necessities before they were given to the church for distribution. I enjoyed seeing how something as simple as a handbag could be turned into something useful and meaningful for another person.

This project taught me that service can begin with recognizing a need and being willing to help meet it. It also showed me the impact that can be made when individuals, families, organizations, and community partners work together. Most importantly, it reminded me that giving is not only about what you provide; it is also about showing people that they are seen, valued, and cared for.
