Competing in the American Legion Oratorical Competition challenged me to do more than deliver a speech. I had to study the U.S. Constitution, understand the ideas behind it, develop my own perspective, and communicate those ideas in a way that could connect with an audience.
I competed first at the local level in Woodstock, where I earned 1st place and advanced to the district competition. At district, I competed against other local winners and earned 2nd place. Advancing to another level made the experience even more meaningful because it showed me what preparation, practice, and confidence could accomplish.
One of the things I enjoyed most was finding ways to connect a document written more than two centuries ago to the world my generation is living in today. The competition strengthened my public speaking and research skills, but it also taught me that understanding the Constitution isn't only about learning history. It is about understanding the rights, responsibilities, and principles that continue to shape our lives.
