Taking Public Speaking (SCOM 1500) through Georgia State University gave me the opportunity to study communication at the college level while still in high school. Although I already had experience speaking on camera and in front of audiences, this course challenged me to look at public speaking differently—not just as something I enjoyed doing, but as a skill I could study, practice, and continue improving.
Throughout the course, I researched, prepared, and delivered speeches designed to inform, persuade, and connect with different audiences. I learned how to organize my ideas, support my message with research and evidence, think more intentionally about my audience, and communicate with greater confidence and purpose.
One of the biggest things I learned is that being a strong speaker is about much more than being comfortable in front of people. Preparation matters. Research matters. Knowing your audience matters. And most importantly, understanding the purpose behind what you are saying matters.
This course strengthened skills I had already begun developing through broadcasting, leadership, and speech competitions while also showing me how much more there is to learn about communication. It gave me greater confidence in my voice and challenged me to become a more thoughtful and intentional communicator.
